The Cardiologist's Wife - Tips on Staying in Shape and More!
Jan 07, 2015

Last week I wrote a column about New Year’s resolutions. I feel inspired by the start of a new year but I usually clean out closets and get better organized since I am pretty focused on staying healthy year round. This week, I’m sharing my top tips for staying in shape and keeping a healthy weight. I have been successful over the years so perhaps these tips will work for you.

I weigh myself nearly every day right after I get up. Weighing at the same time every day gives you an accurate picture of your weight over time. You can expect your weight to fluctuate a bit so I don’t worry if I’m up a couple of pounds. But if the trend continues upward, I figure out why. If I have been eating a few too many goodies, I get back to healthier eating habits. If I’ve missed a few workouts, I step it up.

I exercise several times a week. I have found a variety of activities I enjoy doing so it doesn’t seem like a chore to exercise. I walk the dog, ride horses, practice yoga, swim, dance, lift weights, go on the occasional hike in the woods and sometimes ride a bicycle, but not all of it every week. Many of these are also social activities which make them more fun. Participating in life is so much better than sitting on the sidelines, so get up and go play!

I eat my vegetables! Few things annoy me as much as when someone claims to “hate vegetables”. Sorry, but the human body really is designed to work best as an omnivore, eating both plants and animals. While potatoes are vegetables, try to venture further into the produce section and try some of the other vegetables just sitting there waiting for someone to take them home. Vegetables are simple to fix and require little cooking time. Try roasting them in the oven, my favorite. While you are in the produce section, pick up some apples or bananas. Eat at least one piece of whole fruit several times a week, preferably every day, in addition to vegetables. You should skip the canned fruit drowning in syrup and get more than the fruit at the bottom of the yogurt cup. Eating your veggies also means skipping those unrecognizable fried things on the all-you-can-eat catfish buffet.

While on the topic of eating, I limit the following foods: wheat products like bread, pasta, crackers and cereals, coffee drinks, sodas, any other sweetened beverage, desserts, alcoholic drinks, pizza, fried foods, and processed foods. Since reading the book “Wheat Belly”, I now believe my low consumption of wheat products is another reason I have stayed slim and why so many Americans struggle with their weight. I do eat wheat, just not often. I don’t deprive myself of any foods or drinks but I don’t indulge every day.

Staying healthy is a full time job but feeling well enough to do the things you want to do and avoiding the doctor’s office certainly is worth the effort.
