OD School Chapters set date for “Leave Your Mark” Rally-March
Oct 06, 2011
The Out of the Dark School Committee has announced its plans for the “Leave Your Mark” rally which will be held on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Downtown Jonesboro. The theme for the rally is “What will your legacy be? Stop drug addiction!”

The rally will begin at 11:30 a.m. with an OD Student “Stop drug addiction!” march on Main Street that will start at the intersection with Cate St. and end in front of the Craighead County Courthouse for a community rally.

At press time, 500 plus Out of the Dark Students from 13 of the Craighead County School Chapters are expected to participate along with the school bands from the Nettleton School District. Participants will include several student speakers, Jonesboro Mayor Harold Perrin, Craighead County Judge Ed Hill and musician, Travis Eades. The public is invited to join the students for this community event.

“We are excited that our Craighead County Out of the Dark School Chapters have grown significantly over the past year and that so many school representatives have stepped up to help our school chapters”, said Joyce Glenn, Chair of the OD School Committee. “It will take the entire community’s support to help our youth change the local drug environment. Our kids deserve a better future!” added Glenn.

Out of the Dark School Chapters that are participating include Bay High School, Bay Elementary, Brookland High School, Buffalo Island Central High School, Jonesboro High School, Annie Camp (Jonesboro), MacArthur (Jonesboro), Nettleton High School, Riverside High School, Valley View High School, Valley View Jr. High, Westside High School and Westside Middle School.

Since 2002, Arkansas has reportedly had one of the highest rates in the nation for teens experimenting with prescription pain narcotics and by the end of 2007 chemical addiction had reached epidemic levels with Arkansas being No. 1 in the U.S. for teens abusing these highly addictive drugs. In order to address this rapid growth of chemical addiction, Out of the Dark Inc. along with several school representatives, started Out of the Dark School Chapters in the spring of 2009. Over the past two (2) years, the chapters have grown from a few students to an army of hundreds in all eight (8) public school districts in Craighead County. The school chapters are guided and networked by an OD School Committee and they are supported by the community through the Craighead County Out of the Dark Coalition. Since the creation of the OD Chapters, Craighead County student surveys have been reporting that the rate of teen’s abusing all addictive drugs have decreased dramatically.

Out of the Dark Inc. is a local grass roots volunteer 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that was established in September of 2008 as a response to the growth of chemical addiction and the collateral damage being caused to communities in Northeast Arkansas.
