Four Years of Frugality's Beth Bright Learned it all From "That Girl"
Oct 27, 2011

Everything I needed to know about life on my own, I learned from "That Girl"

Before I was even allowed to think of college, my mom had me watch the first season of this 60s classic. It’s the story of a young twenty-something who moves out of her parents home and into an apartment in New York City. It takes a lot of convincing of her overprotective father, but he soon lets her go thinking she’ll come back home after just a short time of living on her own.

To their surprise, she loves it. While she does face quite a few shenanigans along the way, she makes it and enjoys every minute of life on her own.

This show, while it is Hollywood fiction, taught me quite a bit about living on my own. Ann Marie showed me that working is never that big of a deal. You’ve got to do it to get where you want to be. She showed me that while every opportunity may not result in your “big break,” you should treat everything as if it is. And, she also taught me to be resourceful – when life hands you ketchup and a bowl of hot water, make tomato soup.

So before you go to college, you should take a look at this series. If for nothing else, it’s a good show for bonding with your mother. (Netflix it.)

See ya around campus!
