Four years of Frugality: New Year, More Self-Esteem
Jan 26, 2012

After a bit of a hiatus, I’m finally back with more fun stuff for all you new collegiate out there. Last week, most of us returned to school after a much needed break (it seems as though everyone had a rough semester this fall) and with this new semester, a fresh start has presented itself.

I know it’s the end of January and most people get their resolutions out of the way early on, but having been someone who usually lets themselves down when it comes to resolutions, I decided to wait a little bit and think of what I could possibly do to make this year better. So, for the past few weeks, I’ve been doing a bit of an assessment if you will of what would make this year better than the last. Here’s what I’ve decided.

This year will be about feeling better about myself. By this, I primarily mean doing things to make me the best me I can be. No weight loss goals. No study goals. Nothing that could make me feel bad for not accomplishing. Just good old fashioned self-esteem.

How I’m planning to accomplish this (and already succeeding so far) is by taking more consideration into my appearance. T-shirts are great, but for now they’re for the weekend only. Messy ponytails may seem cute to some, but in reality it just makes you look like you don’t care and while you may not, you really honestly should. Showing up to class looking like a bum will not win over your professor. Besides, if you spend so much time trying to look like you don’t care, that’s precious time that you could have spent looking nice and presentable, even if it is for an eight o’clock class.

Another thing I’ve started doing is eating things that make me feel good. Yes comfort food is great, but some of the more comforting foods are those that you don’t end up feeling terrible about later. My latest obsession (which I will share the recipe for in a later installment) is black bean soup. There’s nothing like a good bowl of soup on a cold night of studying. And the protein is always a good thing.

So, with this new year, try not to worry yourself with goals especially if you are prone to dropping them. Guilt will make you give up in the future. Instead, spend the New Year finding who you are. That’s what college is about anyway.

See ya around campus!
