Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro Receives Awards at Annual Conference

MAY 6, 2012 – JONESBORO, AR    Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro was presented with two awards in recognition of their service to the children of Craighead County during the National Association of Junior Auxiliary’s (NAJA) 71st Annual Education Conference held May 4 and 5 in Little Rock.

The Jonesboro chapter was presented with the Norma DeLong Education Award for its project Growing Healthy. The project was developed by the Jonesboro chapter 15 years ago in an effort to show children the harm of smoking and has since evolved into a healthy-choices program for sixth graders in public and private schools across the Jonesboro area. The program visits schools each year to allow students to participate in the dissection of a pig’s heart and lungs with the assistance of local cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons who volunteer their time to the project as well.

This unique education project has made a big impact in Jonesboro schools and was recently shared with the neighboring Junior Auxiliary chapter in Paragould by holding a Growing Healthy dissection day at Marmaduke schools. The Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro was presented with the Norma DeLong Education award for their unique program that impacts hundreds of children across Jonesboro and for their efforts to share their project with a neighboring Junior Auxiliary.

 

The Public Relations Service Award for Overall Chapter Promotion was presented to Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro for their key initiative to inform the public about their mission of helping hundreds of children in Craighead County through its 11 service projects. It also acknowledged their efforts to utilize its strong relationship local media partners and to layer their message in order to teach the community about the true mission and purpose of Junior Auxiliary in the Jonesboro community.

 

The chapter was also recognized with an Efficiency Award in recognition of administrative excellence, the Membership Award by the NA JA Foundation for 100 percent participation and for the chapter’s annual contribution at the platinum level to the NAJA Graduate Scholarship.

 

The awards were presented during a luncheon and evening awards banquet as part of  this year’s conference that was packed with entertainment, education and networking with other chapters from across the Mid-South. Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro enjoyed speakers such as Bryan Dodge, author of The Good Life Rules: 8 Keys to Being Your Best at Work and at Play; Constance Curry and Kristina Wandzilak, authors of The Lost Years a dual narrative of a mother and daughter giving their first- hand accounts of the years lost  to addiction and alcoholism; and Shar McBee, author of To Lead is to Serve and Joy of Leadership, as well as other speakers. In addition, up and coming Board Members of the chapter were trained in their specific duties for the next year.

 

The National Association of Junior Auxiliaries, a non-profit organization founded in 1941 with Headquarters in Greenville, MS.  NAJA has more than 15,500 active, associate and life members in 100 chapters in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Tennessee and Texas. Junior Auxiliary of Jonesboro was founded in 1950.
