The Southerner and the City Reviews Katy Perry Part of Me Before it Hits Theaters
Jul 03, 2012

I must have been living under a rock because I did not realize that pop star and international phenomenon Katy Perry is the first woman in music history to produce five number one singles off of one album. I learned this last night when I saw her film Katy Perry Part of Me. The film captures Perry’s life both professionally and personally as she takes off on her international “California Dreams Tour.”

The film in 3D is guaranteed to entertain her legions of fans that are sure to flock to theaters decked out in Katy Perry garb. It chronicles her start in the music industry along with the monumental ups and downs that she faced over the last year…including the demise of her marriage. Along with footage of Perry from her early days singing gospel music, movie goers get to see some personal self shot video confessions from Katy herself. The film isn’t all music and fluff. In one scene her manager is uncertain if a show in Brazil will go on as Perry is found openly sobbing, realizing that her marriage to Russell Brand is over.

Early on, we see Brand make his appearance in the film. You could hear and feel the audience react and recoil when Perry persuaded Brand to join a prayer circle before the start of a performance. We all know their fairy tale marriage does not have a happy ending. You will get a glimpse from Perry’s perspective as to why it didn’t work out as she would have hoped.

Claiming she is just a normal girl who followed her dreams, her family talks openly about the Katy they know and love. Growing up with strict rules, Perry wasn’t allowed to listen to anything but Christian music. At some point in her early teens, she heard Alanis Morissett for the first time and the rest is pop star history. Her parents, Keith and Mary Hudson, talk about her song, “I Kissed a Girl”. Her dad is a Pentecostal preacher who looks like he could be related to Paul Schaffer. Needless to say, the song is not her mother’s favorite. Her Dad says he was concerned he was going to lose his ministry after the song hit the charts, but that he didn’t have any problems.

The movie or pop-umentary is sure to be a summer time hit among her fans as the 3D effects really make the scenes from her concert pop. Katy Perry Part of Me is rated PG and opens in theaters on July 5.
