Little Hands Head to the Farm
Oct 24, 2013

I'm pretty big on traditions. Growing up, when finances may have been tight, my childhood holidays never were effected because of the traditions and fun my mom always made sure to continue. Because of that, I'm always looking for fun things that we can make a tradition in our own family. If those things happen to be free or cheap, even better because it teaches the girls that priorities should be family and fun, not money. At the same time, if that tradition requires little or no money, it means that no matter what season we are in, we can protect those traditions. Today, we went to pick apples and it is officially a new autumn tradition for our family. It is so neat to be able to go out and spend time together having fun, but be able to bring back something for that time and money spent is even more neat. It's also a way to get fresh foods while supporting local farms.

The farm we went to today was in Millington, Tenn, right outside of Memphis. It's called Jones Orchard and it was so great! Not only do they have U-pick apple orchards, but they have pears, pumpkins, peaches, strawberries, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, and on and on. We were able to get a half bushel basket and drive out to the orchard and just spend however long we needed picking apples. The girls ran off any energy that built up on the car ride and slept the whole way home. We now have a box of Arkansas Black apples to start eating and cooking. I will make most into spiced applesauce for my applesauce-addicted children and some unsweetened to can for Norah to have in several months when she starts baby food. If you're wanting to have some fun with your family or friends, I definitely recommend a trip over to Jones Orchard!

Until next time, Heather
