Where To Start

Admission to our Driver Rehabilitation Program requires a prescription from your physician for an Occupational Therapy evaluation and a Behind-the-Wheel evaluation.

We welcome any questions you may have regarding the program or your specific needs.

In addition to our Driver Rehabilitation Specialist, our team includes experienced case managers who can assist you with community resources that will get you started on the road to independence.

A valid driver's license or learner's permit is also required if a road test is conducted.

Driver Evaluation

The program begins with a comprehensive evaluation of skills needed to safely operate a motor vehicle. Evaluation will last at least two hours. The client must be accompanied by a family member or friend.

Assessment begins in the Drive Wisely outpatient clinic which is readily accessible with convenient parking. It includes the following:

  • Physical evaluation
  • Visual evaluation
  • Visual/perceptual evaluation
  • Cognitive evaluation

The importance of driving continues in an automobile using our specially-equipped car and includes the following:

  • Dynamic visual processing
  • Complex reaction time
  • Basic vehicle control
  • Traffic safety

Driver Rehabilitation

Training On-the-road and in-classroom training can be provided to those individuals who demonstrate deficits in basic driving skills or those who need special equipment.

Training sessions are completed on a one-to-one basis and are designed to meet each patient’s specific needs.

Consultation Services

Following successful completion of Driver Evaluation and Training, specific vehicle modifications may be recommended.

Your Driver Rehabilitation Therapist (DRT) will help you select a qualified equipment vendor for installation and will ensure correct placement and function to meet your individual needs. Additional training with installed modification is required.

The DRT may also be utilized to help you select an alternative vehicle or lift system that meets your mobility needs.

Presently, Medicare, Medicaid, and private insurances do not cover services related to driving evaluation and training, therefore all services must be paid for by the client or other responsible party at the time of service.
