ASU Education Renewal Zone sponsors Future Teachers Discovery Day Nov. 12
Nov 09, 2010
The Arkansas State University Education Renewal Zone, in conjunction with the ASU Departments of Mathematics, Science, Fine Arts, Physical Education,  Early Childhood Education, Language Arts, History, Foreign Language, Teacher Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum, Special Education, and the ASU Office of Admissions, will be hosting the 2010 Future Teachers Discovery Day on Friday, November 12, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Reng Student Services Center/Student Union, 101 N. Caraway Road, Jonesboro.

Counselors, sponsors, and teachers are invited to bring high-achieving high school juniors and seniors who also may come from diverse populations, including first-generation college students, who are interested in careers in teaching. Such students will interact with ASU faculty and students who will provide one-on-one attention and information to inspire students to become teachers themselves. ASU faculty and students in Math, Science, Early Childhood, Elementary Education, Fine Arts, Middle Level, Language Arts, Foreign Language, Special Education, PE, and History will be on hand to meet with students.

Space is limited, so counselors, sponsors, and teachers are urged to RSVP quickly with their total numbers of participants. Lunch will be provided. RSVP to Sandra Kirksey (skirsey@astate.edu), ASU Education Renewal Zone, (870) 972-2049. Fax Kirksey at (870) 972-2013. Bus drivers are asked to drop participants off at the Student Union where Aggie Road and Caraway Road intersect. Buses will park in the west parking lot of the ASU Convocation Center. Cars may park in the ASU parking garage or in spaces marked for visitors.
The Education Renewal Zone Initiative was developed in 2003, when the Arkansas General Assembly established Education Renewal Zones (ERZs)  across the state to promote collaboration among public schools, education service cooperatives, colleges and universities, and parents and communities.
The Arkansas State University ERZ was established in 2007 to address the needs of schools in northeast and eastern Arkansas. Located on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, the ASU ERZ's objective is to improve student achievement. Collaboration among partners allows schools in eastern Arkansas to access instructional, financial, cultural, and technological support.

The mission of the ASU ERZ is to collaborate with preK-16 educators, students, families, and their supporting communities in order to combine efforts to improve student achievement and learning experiences for all students.

Arkansas State University's Education Renewal Zone Partners include the Brinkley School District, the East Poinsett County School District, the Forrest City School District, the Helena-West Helena School District, the Hoxie School District, the Hughes School District, the Jonesboro School District, the Lee County School District, the Manila School District, the Marion High School, Marked Tree School District, the Marvell School District, the Nettleton School District, the Newport School District, the Osceola School District, the Palestine-Wheatley School District, the Paragould School District, the South Mississippi School District, the Westside Consolidated School District, the Wynne School District, and three educational cooperatives-Crowley's Ridge Educational Cooperative, Great Rivers Educational Cooperative, and Northeast Arkansas Education Cooperative.
