Southerner and the City: Peter Pan and the New Victory Theater - A Win Win
Oct 10, 2013

Lots of you will send me a Facebook message or e-mail me directly when you are coming up to visit New York City and ask for my recommendations of things to see and do. I was bombarded this summer with this very question. Of course, I have my favorites. You should try out brunch at Good Enough to Eat or Norma’s, lunch at The Stand Grill, walk along the Highline, the Hudson River or peruse Chelsea’s art galleries. I like to consume a rich cup of coffee at Gasoline Alley Coffee after getting an amazing haircut at Eva Scrivo Salon. If you want to shop, Bergdorf and Barney’s are favorites as well as Fifth Story and Otte. I’m really excited to have a new addition to my ever growing list. The New Victory Theater on West 42nd Street.

My friend Kim-Marie, from www.luxurytravelmom.com, suggested that I take Corbin to see Peter Pan there on Saturday. I hopped on-line, last minute, and snagged two tickets. Corbin and I headed down to Times Square just in time to grab our seats and see the show.

Why is this theater on my list among the hundreds on Broadway? The New Victory Theater is New York City’s first and only full-time performing arts theater for kids and their families and classmates. The Theater features shows from as close by as Brooklyn and as far away as Moscow. It will soon become my go-to theater destination with Corbin. I know the shows will be age appropriate and the ticket prices will not break the bank! Hello, Disney and Lion King? Yes, I’m talking about you.

A confession from me in regards to theater. I will see just about anything live on a stage. Like the one time I took Mark to see what was proclaimed to be an amazing play The Goat or Who Is Sylvia written by legendary playwright Edward Albee(Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?) with Sally Fields. Turns out, Sally’s long trusted husband was having an affair...with a goat. Sally was amazing. The show was just stupid. I can’t suggest you ever see it no matter who is in the lead role. Corbin, however, is 8-years-old and therefor not always jazzed about seeing everything I suggest. So when I was giving him my super excited, over sold sales pitch on Peter Pan, he bought it and was genuinely excited to go.

We weren’t even 10 minutes into the show and Corbin was on the edge of his seat. Another few minutes and he was laughing. Corbin was immediately taken away to Neverland and introduced to the Darlings and Peter Pan. The ensemble from Sydney’s Belvoir managed to capture the audience and recreate the flying scenes and dispense the magic of Pan brilliantly. Corbin’s biggest laugh came when Tinker Bell called Peter Pan as ass. Not once, but at least twice. You gotta love a feisty fairy! When you find yourself planning your next Big Apple getaway with your kids, you will want to check out The New Victory Theater. We are planning on seeing Sleeping Beauty in November. Carlo Colla and Sons Marionette Company will bring the story to life with the 18th-century craftsmanship of these life like figures.
