The Occasions Lady and The Not-So-Royal Wedding
Apr 17, 2011

14 Days and Counting

In exactly two weeks, I plan to celebrate with friends and family as my fiance, Rodney, and I exchange vows at Mt. Magazine.

Although our wedding will take place only one day after the marriage of England's royal couple, we aren't planning for our ceremony to be quite as expensive, extravagant or exhausting. So, if you find yourself getting bloody weary of hearing about what will surely be the most publicized wedding of all time, check out my blog and let The Occasions Lady take you back to reality as two middle-aged commoners prepare to tie the knot in Arkansas.

So, at two weeks out, here's the latest scoop on the not-so-royal wedding:

Today, Dr. Kristy Rowe came to my rescue at Hobby Lobby just as the aisles of the store's bridal section were about to engulf me. I had no clue the store was having a 50 percent off BRIDAL EVENT when I walked in. Before I knew it, I was having a meltdown over what was necessary and what was not, what was cheesy and what was not, what was a decent value and ... you get the idea. I felt sick and I'm sure I looked a little faint when she spotted me. We visited for a few minutes and then she shared her philosophy during my moment of uncertainty: "Go ahead and get it. You can always take it back."

Such a wise woman.

So, I surveyed the matrimonial merchandise with dozens of prospective brides and grooms half my age and loaded up my cart at the Hobby Lobby Bridal Event. Before heading to the check-out counter, however, I sent a quick text to my neighbors to see if they would come over and help me make sense of it all when I got home.

As I pulled out ribbon, candles, tulle and table decor, E. Paul and Johnny endured my state of "dazed and confused" and help me sort through the avalanche of bridal goods I had unleashed. Now, thanks to them, I think I'm back on track. I spent the rest of the evening rebagging what will be returned to the aisles of the Hobby Lobby bridal section.

Maybe I can talk someone into taking it back with me. At this point, I really don't want to take a chance on finding myself alone at the Hobby Lobby Bridal Event! Lawdy, I'm far too old for that!
