The Southerner and the City: Out of the Big Apple for Apple Picking
Oct 20, 2011

Growing up, there was always a garden nearby. So the concept of picking and eating what you grow is not foreign to me. I spent many days in my Granny’s garden picking tomatoes, cucumber, peas, okra, etc. Until recently, I had never picked anything from a proper orchard, though. That changed this weekend when we loaded up in our rental car and headed out of the city to go apple picking.

It was a picturesque New York day, and with the directions in hand, we took off for Masker Orchards in Warwick, New York. The orchard sits on 200 acres of rolling land with spectacular views of the Hudson Valley area. We drove right into the orchard, parked our car and started walking around. As the picking season is coming to a close, many of the trees were picked over. That , however, did not stop Mark from climbing up in a few trees determined to pick an apple. We finally found a section where the trees were literally covered in beautiful, juicy, red apples. Lots of low hanging fruit which made the adventure more enjoyable for Corbin.

We all really enjoyed finding just the right apple and adding it to our bag. Somewhere along the way, I realized that while it was fun to pick apples, I didn’t have much of a need for two big bags of apples. I can only get so creative in the kitchen! So far, I’ve whipped up an apple crisp and sent apples slices to school for snack time. Baked apples and applesauce are also on my list of yummy treats to make, too. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know! Maskers Orchards also has hay rides, pony ride and fun games for the kids. And of course, you can buy some apple cider to take home with you. As you are driving out of the farm, you pull up to a worker with a receipt tablet, who asks you how many bags you have. He writes down the number. He then proceeds to check your trunk to make sure you haven’t stashed a few extra bags of apples. Honesty is the best policy. But an inspection of your trunk by an orchard worker also keeps you honest.

As I stepped out of the car Sunday, the first thing I noticed was the smell of apples. It was a fantastic aroma that floated nicely in the crisp fall air and the blue sky. If you want to get a whiff of apples, you’ll have to get out there before Sunday. Their website says due to a big picking season, they will be closing on October 23. I’m so glad we made it out there and took in some rural New York apple picking. Keep up with all of the Southerner in the City’s adventures at www.djduckworthyoga.com/blog.
