Monday Popcorn: The Avengers
May 07, 2012

Hello there my friends! For those of you who missed my announcement last week, this will be my last blog. My internship is coming to an end, so it is time for me to move on to the next phase of life. I have greatly enjoyed going to the movies every week and sharing my thoughts with you and for those who have read my blog, I thank you for supporting me and for those who haven’t; well sorry you missed out on all the fun. This semester I have seen some really good movies and some really sucky movies, but I’ve had a good time seeing all of them. It seems only fitting then that my last movie review would be over one of the most highly anticipated films of the year and maybe even the past five years—The Avengers. This movie has been a long time coming and I know many of you have probably been counting down the days until it finally hit theaters and now that it’s here I guess I can tell you if it’s worth all the hysteria.

Since there have been a few movies that have proceeded this one, and so many details, I’ll try to keep this short and sweet so as not to overwhelm you with all the facts. Basically, if you want the entire back story, you’ll have to rent all the DVDs which include: The Incredible Hulk (the one with Edward Norton, not Eric Bana), Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America. In those movies we are introduced to the characters and are shown their origins. The Avengers are made up of self-proclaimed billionaire playboy Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), everybody’s favorite green monster, the Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), a hammer-wielding demi-god, Thor (Chris Hemsworth), my personal favorite, Captain America/ Steve Rogers (Chris Evans), female super spy Black Widow/ Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) and expert marksman, Hawkeye/Clint Barton (Jeremy Renner) and they are going up against the evil schemes of Loki of Arsgard, (in my opinion he looks a lot like Rooney Mara in The Girl With the dragon Tattoo with that flippy slick hair), who is also the adopted brother of Thor. Loki comes to Earth when this blue glowing cube called the Tesseract opens a portal for him and he immediately starts wreaking havoc with the ambition to rule the earth (why does every villain want to rule earth anyway?).

Nick Fury, director of secret espionage law enforcement agency S.H.I.E.L.D., realizes that the power of the Tesseract and Loki are too much for S.H.I.E.L.D. to handle by themselves, so he activates the “Avengers Initiative” which brings together all the superheroes I mentioned above. What do you think happens when you put a bunch of superheroes (yes I’m including Hawkeye and Black Widow who have not been genetically altered in any way) in one room and try to get them to play together? Well, ego, especially that of Mr. Stark, gets in the way and pretty soon they’re fighting each other instead of the bad guy which is of course exactly what he wants. It takes the death of a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent to make them realize that they must join together to bring down Loki and the army of soldiers that will come pouring out of the sky later. That’s the basic gist of the whole movie; bad guy thinks he can take over the world and the good guys have to show him that he’s not all that, and obviously there will be a showdown that will result in the massive destruction of a city. What more do you need?

The Avengers is what superhero movies are all about. Everything that you could ever want in a movie is in this one and that is why, for the first time and the only time (because this is my last blog) I am giving a movie a 10. That’s right people, The Avengers is perfect. There is not one negative thing that I can say about it. It was everything I wanted and more. Maybe it’s because I’m crazy for movies about superheroes or maybe it’s because I’ve got a huge crush on Captain America; I don’t know but I just really loved it. It was surprisingly really funny, with plenty of explosions and shots of Scarlett Johansson to make the boys happy and plenty of hunky men in spandex to make the girls happy. I wanna have a movie marathon and watch all the movies that came before The Avengers and then go see it again. I can’t think of a better movie to start the summer or to end my blog with. Oh and just so you know, you should stick around and watch the credits. There might be a little somethin’ somethin’ after the movie that you might want to see.

Well guys, I guess this is it. I’ll keep going to the movies every week and if you really want my opinion just write on my Facebook wall or tweet me and ask. I won’t say goodbye, I’ll just say…

Until next time,

Raven
