Location, Location, Location...

Unlimited consignment opens downtown

By John Griffith
jgriffith@paragoulddailypress.com Published: Wednesday, March 31, 2010 12:15 PM CDT Marie Collins knew for some time about Abilities Unlimited’s consignment store, “The Unlimited,” but she lives a few blocks east of downtown Paragould and it was just too far to travel west of the Greene County Tech School District, even for bargain deals.

Since The Unlimited opened two weeks ago at 121 N. Second St., Collins said she has shopped there four times; she bought a green dress Tuesday.

Store manager Brooke Conley said business is booming since the move and she attributes it to the location, which as the adage in real estate goes: “is everything.”

“Oh wow. The turnover, versus there to here is a dramatic difference,” Conley said. “There, we always had the same customers who came in, but here, we’ve got people from the banks and offices of downtown who come in on their lunch break. A lot of people who’ve never heard of us come in here now.”

Conley said Monday morning was a slow day. A few customers drifted into the store, pawed at items and made purchases.

Secret’s out
A shy shopper who asked not be named said she lives about equidistant from the old and new locations and followed The Unlimited into town. She has shopped there consistently because the quality of clothing is always high and the prices are dirt cheap.

“People at church say: ‘You always dress so nice.’ This is my secret,” she said with a knowing smile.

Lea Ann Vanaman has shopped at The Unlimited for years, too. She stopped in Monday on her way to a lunch appointment.

Vanaman said shopping thriftily became a habit forced on her in high school by the necessity of living a frugal existence.

“Now, I can’t hardly bring myself to pay full price,” Vanaman said.

She said she bought herself a pair of shoes, $80 new, for $15 from The Unlimited and that suits her just fine.

They sell, you save

The Unlimited takes clothing in all sizes and categories: teen’s, women’s, men’s, children’s, including shoes and even, recently, baby furniture and toys. Fifty percent of a sale is returned to the consignor and the rest remains with Abilities Unlimited and funds workshops benefiting people with developmental disabilities.

The stuff there is cheap, too, real cheap: brand name clothing sells for up to 80 percent less than new.

“Let’s say we’ve got a pair of Buckle jeans,” Conley said. “Buckle jeans sell for $80 to $130-$140 in the store, I will sell them for $25. A lot of our blouses and tops range around $8.98 and on up depending on name brand.”

Purchases are tax free and The Unlimited accepts all forms of payment, or as Conley said: “Anything that spends.”

Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Conley said within the next three weeks, open hours will expand to Mondays.
