Since 2002, Arkansas has reportedly had one of the highest rates in the nation for teens experimenting with prescription pain narcotics and by the end of 2007 chemical addiction had reached epidemic levels with Arkansas being No. 1 in the U.S. for teens abusing these highly addictive drugs. In order to address this rapid growth of chemical addiction, Out of the Dark Inc. along with several school representatives, started Out of the Dark School Chapters in the spring of 2009. Over the past two (2) years, the chapters have grown from a few students to an army of hundreds in all eight (8) public school districts in Craighead County. The school chapters are guided and networked by an OD School Committee and they are supported by the community through the Craighead County Out of the Dark Coalition. Since the creation of the OD Chapters, Craighead County student surveys have been reporting that the rate of teen’s abusing all addictive drugs have decreased dramatically.
