About Prostate Cancer
American Cancer Society 2013 figures show that in the state of Arkansas nearly 2,370 men will receive a new diagnosis of prostate cancer and 320 men will die from prostate cancer. So, what is prostate cancer? Prostate cancer is the growth of malignant or cancerous cells in the prostate gland. These cells may — or may not — grow and spread beyond the prostate to surrounding glands and tissues. Even if the cancer spreads beyond the prostate to other body organs, it is still called prostate cancer.
It is important to know that prostate cancer grows at different rates in different men. Compared to most cancers, prostate cancer tends to grow very slowly. Therefore, prostate cancer may have little or no effect on how a man feels, or how long he lives. But, there are types of prostate cancer that can be very aggressive and grow and spread beyond the prostate gland to other parts of the body.
