ASU Museum presents 'Nanotechnology: What's the Big Deal?' opening March 19
The Arkansas State University Museum will open a new exhibition, "Nanotechnology:What's the Big Deal?" on Saturday, March 19. The exhibition, which will be inJonesboro through Sunday, June 26, has been created by the Nanoscale InformalScience Education Network (NISE Net), which is funded by the National ScienceFoundation.
This nationally designed exhibit illustrates how nanoparticles can havevery unexpected properties. The nanotechnology exhibition introduces the basics of nanoscience through several"mini-exhibit" components. At the ultra-tiny nanoscale, materials exhibit uniqueproperties and often rely on self-assembly techniques to form useable nanotechnology.Visitors can view what a billion (and a one-billionth) of something looks like, manipulatethe size of a quantum dot to see its strange, changing properties, and watch as floating "molecules" move themselves into an orderly pattern on an air hockey table.
Arkansas Children's Hospital has partnered with the network by sponsoring three ofthe nanomedicine exhibits. These components feature information about research beingconducted specifically in Arkansas in this important new field. Visitors will learn how doctors at Arkansas Children's Hospital use nanotechnology every day to help patients.
Thanks to the Arkansas Discovery Network, which is funded by the Donald W. ReynoldsFoundation, limited funding is available on a first-come, first-served basis to help with the cost of school field trips. Visit http://www.astate.edu/a/museum/school-field-trip.dot to reserve a date and timefor your group.
This is a great science exhibition that encourages learning for visitors of all ages.
The ASU Museum supports lifelong learning and encourages families to play together and learn together. Visit http://museum.astate.edu for the 2011 calendar of events and information on fun-but-educational birthday parties.Regular museum hours are Tuesday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and university holidays.
