CNN producer to speak as part of R-TV Professional-in-Residence series

JONESBORO-- Eric F. Burns, a supervising producer for CNN at the networkheadquarters in Atlanta, Ga., will speak to students March 15-16 as part ofthe Arkansas State University Radio-Television Professional-in-ResidenceSpeaker Series.

Burns, 1986 ASU graduate with a bachelor of science degree in radio/television broadcasting, manages, supports, and leads a team of executive producers as well as supervises nearly 20 hours of live programming for the cable news network.

Since joining CNN in 1999, Burns has served as an integral part of several award-winning stories. In 2002, Burns was the executive producer for "Showdown: Iraq" with veteran newsman Wolf Blitzer and developed and launched the show. A year later, he served as the executive producer during the start of the war with Iraq. Burns held the same position during the breaking news coverage of the 2004tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia as well as Hurricane Katrina in 2005 whichdevastated the Gulf Coast.

Burns also worked as an executive producer duringthe coverage of the 2007 Virginia Tech University shootings during which 33students and faculty members died.Before joining the network, Burns produced for WAGA-TV and WSB-TV as well asserved as a news director and executive producer for WGNX- TV in Atlanta.

Burns has earned several awards for excellence in news. The team coveringHurricane Katrina earned a Peabody Award, an annual, international award forexcellence in radio and television broadcasting. In that same year, a DuPont Award, an American award honoring excellence inbroadcast journalism, was presented to Burns and his crew for the tsunami coverage of Southeast Asia. A Peabody Award in 2008 honored the coverage of the Presidential Primary campaigns and debates. Burns is also the winner of the Associated Press best newscast award and has had multiple Emmy Award nominations.
