DSO Announces 24th Annual Young Artist Concerto Competition

The Delta Symphony Orchestra will hold its 24th Concerto Competition Saturday, January 11th, 2014 in Riceland Hall at the Fowler Center on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Twenty-three finalists will perform on Piano, Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, and Voice to determine a winner in each category. Auditions begin promptly at 9am and are open to the public. There will be a lunch break at Noon and auditions will begin again at 1:30 pm, with the final audition at 4:00 pm.

As audition for each of the five categories are completed a winner in that category will be announce. Overall winners will be announced in Riceland Hall after the last audition. At that time, two Grand Prize winners will be chosen to perform with the Symphony on its February 16th concert. The Neale Bartee Young Artist Award will be presented to an outstanding High School student from Northeast Arkansas. The event is presented by the Delta Symphony Orchestra and the Fowler Center.

Finalists this year are: Vocal- Kate Sanders of Cave City, AR, Matthew Walker of Arkadelphia, AR, and Genevieve Kimbrough of Little Rock, AR; Strings- Lydia, Molly and Thea Wilkens-Reed of Memphis, TN, Grace Kimbrough of Thompson Station, TN, Angela Holmes of Lee’s Summitt, MO, Allison Kerr of Arlington, TN, Nathan Cottrell of Bartlett, TN, Jesse Kasinger of Springfield, TN, Caleb R. Dean of Millington, TN; Woodwinds- Lisa Su of Germantown, TN, Charlotte Jeong of Jonesboro, AR, Katherine Lile of Russellville, AR, Eric Stultz of Stillwater, OK, and Shannon Moore of Trenton, TN; Brass & Percussion- Michael Barnes of Lawton, OK, Hiroaki Iizumi of Chicago, IL, and Carter Harlan of Arkadelphia, AR; Piano- Hunter Mabery of Murfreesboro, AR, Orlando Riveros of Arkadelphia, AR, Connor and Elizabeth Dang of Cordova, TN.

The Grand Prize winners will receive $500 each, and the other category winners will receive $250 each. The outstanding high school student will receive $100

The Delta Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artist Concerto Concert will be Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m. at the ASU Fowler Center. In addition to the performances by the winners of the competition there will also be a 200-voice children’s chorus made up of students from area elementary schools.
