Event Description: KASU 91.9 FM teams up once again with TheArtsAT311 to present singer and guitarist Jim Hurst at the first CoffeeHouse Concert of 2016 on Thursday, March 17 at 7 pm at 311 S. Church St. in Jonesboro.
Hurst began playing the guitar at the age of four and developed his own style based on the styles of flat-picking musicians Tony Rice and Doc Watson and finger-style guitarists Merle Travis and Chet Atkins.
In 1988, Hurst moved to Nashville, Tennessee to pursue a career in music, and soon joined country music singer Holly Dun's Rio Band, where his first performance was at the Grand Ole Opry.
Hurst then toured with country singer Trisha Yearwood and her band and also worked with Sara Evans on her album, "No Place That Far," to which he contributed both his vocal and guitar talent.
Starting in 1995, Hurst began performing in the Grammy-nominated band, Claire Lynch and The Front Porch String Band, with whom he continued to work for the next 15 years. He and Lynch's bassist, Missy Raines, also recorded two albums together – “Two” and “Synergy” -- and performed at several bluegrass venues together. Hurst was twice named "Guitar Player of the Year" by the International Bluegrass Music Association in 2001 and 2002. He was nominated for the same award in 2015.
In 2010, Hurst began his solo career and has recorded five albums of his own, "Open Window," "Second Son," "A Box of Chocolates," "Intrepid," and in 2014, "Looking Glass."
Currently, he is performing his music both nationally and internationally in concerts that showcase his talent as an esteemed vocalist and guitarist.
He also performs as guitarist with the David Grisman (Jerry Garcia, Old and in the Way, Even Dozen Jug Band) Folk-Jazz Trio.
