Event Description: Our next KASU Coffee House Concert will be Thursday October 23 at 7:00 p.m. with El Buho, the Memphis jazz-infused band led by renowned Arkansas trumpeter and trombonist Gary Gazaway, performing at the Arts@311, at 311 S. Church St., Jonesboro, Ark.

This dynamic group features keyboardist Patrick Fusco, bassist Doc Samba, and drummer Peewee Jackson, all from Memphis. Gazaway plays trumpet and keyboard and leads the group through original songs and modified Jazz standards that can be melodic, mellow, and intense, and contain open sections for modern free-form improvisation, with traditional, ethnic, and current rhythm styles layered underneath. His music has been described as as an incredible fusion of Blues, Jazz, Rock, and Latin, that creates a fresh instrumental sound.

Gary "El Búho" Gazaway was influenced by Northeast Arkansas’ musical heritage of blues, soul, rockabilly, folk, country, and jazz at a young age. As an adult Gazaway began performing in New York City, Miami, Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Hawaii, and Nashville, learning about musical cultures from around the world.

Gazaway has performed or recorded with Latin American artists including Israel (Cachou) Lopez, The Machito Orchestra, Celia Cruz, Lisette, Flora Purim, OPA, Toninho Horta, Jaco Pastorius, Ornette Coleman, Nneena Freelon, Ira Sullivan, Herb Alpert, Joe Cocker, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Steve Winwood, The Memphis Horns, The Committments, Delbert McClinton, George Jones, Derek Trucks, Victor Wooten, Phish; and on more than 25 major label albums, 5 multi-platinum.

In 2008, Gazaway conceptualized Arkansas’ official “Rock And Roll Highway 67”, a stretch of Old US Highway 67 from the Missouri state line south through Newport. The Arkansas Legislature enacted a bill which made it official in 2009.
