MUSEUM TO HOLD ARTIFACT ID DAY IN BLYTHEVILLE
The public is invited and encouraged to bring your historic and prehistoric artifacts to
the Delta Gateway Museum for Artifact ID Day on Saturday, March 26. Staff from the
Arkansas Archeological Survey (AAS) will be at the museum to identify and provide
information about objects and artifacts brought in by private collectors and members
of the public. Leslie Hester, founding director of the Delta Gateway Museum, is a
Heritage Studies PhD student at Arkansas State University.
March is Arkansas Archeology Month, and according to Dr. Claudine Payne, archeologist
at the AAS Blytheville Station, artifact identification is one of the services that the AAS
provides to the public in honor of Archeology Month. "While we can't appraise or
speculate about the value of an object, we can certainly talk about who, what, when,
where, and how. Its a great opportunity to discuss your artifact with a professional
archeologist," Dr. Payne said.
"This is a free public service for people who have historic or prehistoric artifacts that
they can't identify or that they just want more information about. We also think there
are forms and symbolism out there that we haven't had the opportunity to see before,
especially among prehistoric Native American objects, and that's an exciting prospect
for archeologists and museum professionals," said Leslie Hester, Founding Director of
the Delta Gateway Museum.
Artifact ID Day will be from 1 - 3 pm on Saturday, March 26 at the Delta Gateway
Museum, located in the historic Kress Building at 210 W. Main Street in Blytheville.
