Continuing Education and Community Outreach program to offer sports
medicine workshop for high schoolers
An introductory sports medicine workshop will be presented by Arkansas
State University's Continuing Education and Community Outreach program for
high school students in grades 10 through 12. The workshop is designed for
students interested in sports medicine and sports first aid.
The workshop is scheduled for Saturdays, Feb. 19 and Feb. 26, and then
again Saturdays, March 5 and March 12. The first session is located in the
Athletic Complex at ASU Stadium, 2800 Alumni Boulevard, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
Subsequent different sessions will be conducted at separate locations.
Instructors include ASU's Certified Head Athletic Trainer Ron Carroll, ASU
Director of Athletic Training Education Amanda Wheeler and other sports
medicine experts.
A one-time cost of $40 per enrollee includes lunches for all four sessions.
A free gift will be provided for registrants. Parents are invited to attend a
general session each Saturday from 2-3 p.m. to ask questions and receive a
tour of the facilities.
"It's exciting to be able to expose area high school students to sports
medicine and all health care fields," said Carroll. "The workshop also
exposes students to degree programs at ASU and enables their parents to learn
about academic programs and careers in the health care areas that their sons
or daughters may want to pursue."
Students will be exposed to a variety of sports medicine fields, concepts and
sports first aid methods and will learn from health and sports medicine
speakers, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons
and strength and conditioning coaches.
In addition, they will learn about sports medicine career options, learn or
refresh cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and gain first responder
action tips for icing, taping, and bracing injuries. There will be demonstrations
and hands-on projects for response techniques and intervention.
A certificate in Sports First Aid and CPR certification will be awarded to
students who successfully complete all four sessions of the course.
