ASU - Jonesboro: Terry 'Harmonica' Bean, Daddy Mack Blues Band to perform as part
of Delta Symposium XVII April 8
Mississippi bluesman Terry 'Harmonica' Bean and Memphis's Daddy Mack Blues Band will
perform in concert Friday, April 8, at 7:30 p.m. in Arkansas State University 's Reng
Student Service Center/Student Union Auditorium. Their performances are part of Delta
Symposium XVII: The Delta in Print, Image, and Sound. The event, like all symposium
events, is free and open to the public.
Mississippi blues musician Terry 'Harmonica' Bean will take the stage first in this
double-billed show. A native of Pontotoc, Bean is carrying on the Delta Blues
tradition of his father, noted down-home blues player Eddie Bean. Terry 'Harmonica'
Bean plays solo acts and with his blues band. Bean has also performed with many
well-known Delta artists including James 'T-Model' Ford, Asie Payton, and Lonnie
Pitchford. He is consciously dedicated to "keeping alive" older styles of blues.
"What's stimulating to me," he says, "is people hearing the blues played like they
used to hear it."
The Daddy Mack Blues Band plays in the urban blues style made famous in Memphis,
Chicago, and other legendary blues cities. Led by guitarist and vocalist Mack Orr,
the band consists of veteran blues musicians who have toured internationally.
Members of the band have played with major blues acts, including the Fieldstones and
other important acts based in the Mississippi Delta. The band performs regularly at
the Center for Southern Folklore, and they have been featured acts at festivals
across the country. They play in a Deep Delta electric blues style that preserves
the sound of Memphis's blues, but they also include contemporary blues-rock tunes in
their live shows and acclaimed recordings.
