ASU - Jonesboro: Tulsa World assistant editor to visit campus as part of Joel Gambill
Distinguished Speaker series
JONESBORO -- Mary Bishop, the assistant editor of the Tulsa World newspaper, is the
featured speaker of the Dr. Joel Gambill Distinguished Alumni speakers, Monday and
Tuesday, March 28-29, on the Arkansas State University campus. Bishop will speak to
students during her two-day stay.
Bishop, who earned her master of science degree in Mass Communications from ASU in
1985, joined the Tulsa World as a copy editor in July 1995 and became assistant city
editor in May 1996. Her responsibilities as assistant city editor include managing
obituary writers and the Justice Team, a group of reporters who cover police, fire
and courts.
She also assigns and edits stories as well as editing breaking news and stories from
other teams, including government and education; managing the city desk at night;
posting breaking news and other stories.
Her title changed to assistant editor in early March when the newspaper reorganized
the newsroom. Bishop's duties expanded to include business, scene and sports as well
as news.
Prior to earning her masters degree from ASU, Bishop graduated in 1983 with a
bachelor of arts degree in mass communication from East Central University in Ada,
Okla. She has completed post-graduate work at the University of Oklahoma and East
Central University as well as course work toward a doctorate of education at
Oklahoma State University.
She worked as a reporter from the Bristow News and Record Citizen in Oklahoma in
1986 and served as copy editor for The Daily Oklahoman during the summer of 1986.
Bishop was an assistant professor of journalism at East Central University from
August 1986 to May 1995 when she joined the Tulsa World.
