Wally Moon to Speak

Former Major League baseball player Wally Moon will be the guest speaker at the next Craighead County Historical Soceity Meeting on July 2 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the First Baptist Church, 700 South Union, Jonesboro. Refreshments will be served.
Moon, a native of Bay, had an exciting baseball career with the St. Louis Cardinals and the Los Angeles Dodgers for 12 years. One of his claims to fame was hitting a home run the first time at bat in the major leagues. He was chosen Rookie of the Year in 1954 while playing for the Cardinals.
Wally went on to hit 142 home runs and hit for a .289 batting average with 661 runs bated in. He played the outfield and first base for both teams and was a three-time All Star. He lead the major leagues in on base percentage in 1961 and triples in 1959 with 11.
Moon will be selling and signing his new book "Moon Shots: Reflections of a Baseball Life," that tell of his childhood in Bay to an All-Star career in major league baseball.
