Young Artists Concerto Concert

The Delta Symphony Orchestra will perform the Young Artists Concerto Concert conducted by Dr. Neale Bartee on Sunday, February 12 at 2 p.m. at the Arkansas State University Fowler Center.  Grand prize winners from the Young Artist Concerto Competition, which was held on January 14, 2012, will perform as soloists with the symphony.  19 year-old violinist William

Overcash from Brinkley, Arkansas and 24 year-old soprano, Renee Smith from Houston, Texas are the 2012 grand prize winners.   William is a freshman at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio and studies violin with David Bowlin.  Renee is a graduate student at Arkansas State University and studies voice with Marika Kyriakos.  Sponsors for this year's competition and concert are Bill and Dawn Cantwell and the Jonesboro Advertising and Promotions Commission.

 

Other finalists in the Young Artists Concerto Competition include: 20

year-old Zachary McCoy, of Memphis, Tennessee, who placed first in the brass and percussion division on Vibraphone; 23 year-old Luci Disano, of Greeley, Colorado, who placed first in the woodwind division on clarinet; and eight year-old Connor and 11 year-old Elizabeth Dang, of Memphis, Tennessee, who placed first in the piano division.  The finalists in each category receive a cash prize of $250. The two grand prize winners receive an additional $250 and will perform on stage with the Symphony at the February 12 concert in Riceland hall. This year's Neale Bartee award, which goes to an outstanding high school student in grades 9-12, was awarded to Aaron Hong of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Hong is in the 9th grade at Annie Camp Junior High and is the son of Dr. Michael and Connie Hong also of Jonesboro. Hong will receive a cash prize of $100.00.

 

The program will open with Richard Wagner's Prelude to the Third Act of

"Lohengrin"followed by Renee Smith singing "An die nacht" by Richard Strauss and "Regnava del silenzio" by Gaetano Donizetti.  Next violinist William Overcash will perform the Second Violin Concerto by Sergei Prokofiev.  After a brief intermission the orchestra will perform Russian Easter Overture by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov.

 

This concert will also feature a 200 voice children's choir from 4th, 5th

and 6th grade schools in the northeast Arkansas region.  Students from

Jonesboro Visual and Performing Arts, Paragould Baldwin and Oak Grove

Elementary schools, Nettleton Fox Meadow Elementary School, Marion

Intermediate, Jonesboro Math and Science, and Valley View Intermediate will be participating. During this portion of the program the Children's Chorus will sing with the Symphony on the following numbers: God Bless America by Irving Berlin, Three Dominican Folk Songs arranged by Francesco Nunez, Can You Hear Me? By Bob Chilcott, and the Star Spangled Banner by Francis Scott Key, accredited to John Stafford Smith and arranged by Floyd Werle.

 

The Delta Symphony Orchestra has selected Dr. Ryan Fisher, Assistant

Professor of Music Education at University of Central Arkansas, as the

clinician/consultant for this project. Dr. Fisher's teaching experience in

the Texas public schools and his success with children's choirs make him

uniquely qualified for this task.  Dr. Fisher is in his third year as the

director of the award winning Central Arkansas Children's Choir.  Under his

direction, CACC has performed with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and

Conway Symphony Orchestra and was recently featured at the Arkansas Music Educators Association Fall Conference.

 

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior adults and $10 for students.
