The Cardiologist's Wife Gives Us Cooler Weather Tips
Nov 06, 2014

We are barely into fall with a few chilly days and already everyone is complaining about the cold, the dark, the dreary weather. I suffered through the summer heat and mosquitoes with very little grumbling so instead of complaining your way through winter and making yourself and others miserable, how about trying a different approach? Many people really do experience seasonal affective disorder or dislike cold weather and shorter days but there are better ways to cope than by griping and sulking. Here are some tips to get you to next May.

If you are cold, dress in layers. Turning up the heat makes your house stuffy, dries out your sinuses and skin plus puts a dent in your wallet. Set the thermostat around 65 to 68 and wear a sweater, not a thin cotton shirt. Scarves aren’t just fashionable, they keep you warmer. Invest in some comfortable boots and wear taller socks. Guys can do the same or throw on a sporty vest.

Make sure to check your windows and doors for leaks and have your heating system checked to be sure all is in working order. If you have a fireplace, get a chimney sweep to check it as well so you don’t have a fire in an unintended place. Get a load of firewood delivered.

Take advantage of the daylight hours by exercising early in the morning after sunrise. Try running your errands on your lunch break when possible instead of waiting till after work and doing them in the dark. Don’t cover up your windows; let in the light! Make your house feel cozy by lighting candles, using the fireplace, switching to flannel sheets and putting out some pretty throws to cover up in bed while watching TV.

Break out those comfort food recipes. A bowl of hot vegetable soup or chili will warm you up fast and oatmeal for breakfast is better than cold cereal. Hot drinks like coffee or tea will keep you hydrated and warmer. Just don’t load up on empty calories to get through winter.

Comedian Milton Berle said, “Laughter is an instant vacation.”, and he was so right. Surely you have a few Facebook friends who post jokes and humorous incidents rather than a litany of sour thoughts. Watch your favorite sitcom or funny movie. Listen to the Blue Collar comedy station on Sirius radio on your daily commute. Play with your children or pets.

Find joy in the season. Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukah, New Year’s and Valentines Day are just around the corner so keep your mind on giving others happiness rather than your own unhappiness. Decorate your home, send cards to loved ones, catch up with friends and family at holiday gatherings and spread the joy.

Exercise is a great mood lifter plus you’ll feel good about yourself if you maintain a healthy weight and body tone through the holidays. Go to the gym so you can exercise and socialize with others at the same time or have a friend join you for regular walks. Exercise will keep you warmer!

Last, try a new hobby, take a class or go on a mini vacation. Do something to stimulate your mind and your mood will improve!
