The Cardiologist's Wife - Take Your Vitamins!
Mar 11, 2015

Turns out Mom and Dad were right, you really do need your to take vitamins though even your parents probably had no idea the exact role that vitamins play in maintaining good health. Research is constantly revealing exciting new information which can help us to live longer and better lives. Vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids are two supplements which work together to improve overall health in many ways.

Vitamin D has long been known to be important for strong bones which is why milk is fortified with with it. A growing number of scientists and physicians believe that vitamin D deficiency leads to an increased risk for heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure and diabetes and that taking vitamin D supplements can reduce that risk. Our bodies naturally produce vitamin D when our skin is exposed to the sun but several situations limit our ability to produce enough to keep us healthy such as sunscreen use, aging, being overweight or dark skinned.

Insufficient levels of vitamin D reduce calcium absorption, contributing to osteoporosis and potential bone fractures. Vitamin D also plays a role in brain function. Those with low levels of vitamin D usually suffer from diminished mental function and are prone to Parkinson’s, depression and chronic fatigue. It can take several months to attain a normal level of vitamin D but doing so improves your overall health.

At the same time, there is strong evidence that taking omega-3 supplements can lower blood pressure and triglycerides, both risk factors for heart disease, and help reduce your risk for cancer and other serious conditions. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for proper brain function; those low in omega-3’s often suffer from depression and mood swings. Researchers are excited by studies showing significant improvements in memory and learning by those taking omega-3 supplements and as much as a 60% reduction in developing Alzheimer’s! The body does not make its own so you must get omega-3 from the food you eat or by taking supplements. Omega-3’s are found in fish like salmon, albacore tuna and sardines as well as olive oil, some fruits and vegetables and fish oil supplements.

A major Italian study showed that taking 1000 mg of fish oil daily after the first heart attack reduces your chances of having a second heart attack. Fish oil supplements are also thought to reduce your risk of sudden cardiac death and rhythm problems. People with high levels of omega-3’s have more of the genetic material which is thought to lead to longevity.

There are plenty of over the counter vitamins and supplements these days so picking the best one can be difficult. Prescription fish oil supplements may be a bit better but if you choose over the counter, look for 1400 mg which is equivalent to prescription strength. For vitamin D, choose one that is 5000 IU. With so much strong evidence of the health effectiveness of these two supplements, why wouldn’t you take them? Barry and I both do.
