The Cardiologist's Wife - Healthy Skin Tips
Jan 11, 2017

Our skin may be the largest organ in our body but we don’t tend to think of it the same way we do our heart or liver. It’s just skin, isn’t it? Skin fulfills many important roles in our health and deserves better care than some of us give it. Skin is more than just a canvas for us to cover with makeup, tattoos or piercings. Skin is more than just a covering to hide the gross stuff underneath. If you understand the purpose of our skin, maybe you’ll take better care of it because skin care is not just for looks.

As the the largest organ, your skin serves as the largest barrier against infection. The skin’s surface is slightly acidic while some areas are slightly dry, which inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria. The cells on the skin’s surface are tightly connected to keep out pathogens. There are also special cells that send out a chemical signal to trigger the body’s immune system when they sense the presence of harmful bacteria. When skin gets too dry and irritated, it can develop cracks through which bacteria can enter and cause an infection. Bacteria can enter also through cuts or wounds in the skin which is why you should keep a cut clean. Keeping skin healthy and moist helps keep the barrier strong and effective.

The skin serves other functions as well. It acts to regulate our body temperature and fluid balance through sweat. The skin contains a network of nerve cells that detect changes in the environment such as heat, cold, touch or pain. Our skin uses the sun’s energy to synthesize vitamin D which keeps our bones strong.

In order to do it’s job, skin must be in good shape. Healthy skin better resists aging, heals faster and wards off disease better than unhealthy skin. Poor skin care can lead to rashes, sores, acne, deep wrinkles and even scaring.

Keep skin healthy by staying well hydrated with plenty of water and eating a healthy diet filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains to provide the vitamins and minerals it needs. Clean your skin using warm water, not hot and a mild soap, as hot water or harsh soaps can dry your skin too much. Limit your time in the shower or tub as long baths can also strip moisture from your skin. Apply lotion to your skin soon after bathing to lock in moisture. Yes, even men should apply lotion to their skin!

Shave carefully, using a clean sharp razor and shaving cream, gel or lotion so the razor doesn’t drag the skin instead of gliding over it. Shaving in the direction the hair grows, not against it for best results.

Another good reason not to smoke is that it damages the skin. Smoking narrows the tiny blood vessels in the outermost layer of skin, decreasing blood flow. This deprives the skin of oxygen and nutrients important to skin health. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin, the fibers that provide strength and elasticity. Always use sunscreen or or protective clothing while in the sun to prevent cancers and further aging.

Take care of your skin so it can take care of you!
