The Cardiologist's Wife - Enjoy Life!
Feb 08, 2017

Today may be the first day of the rest of your life but what will you do with it? Will it be another day wasted like the last 1000 days when you griped about your job, got angry at your kids, your spouse, your brother? Will it be another day you sit inside all day, surfing your phone endlessly despite the sunshine begging you to come outside? Are you going to smoke that pack of cigarettes, eat that bag of donuts or down yet another soda? Why NOT do something different? Today could be your last first day.

Just for today, enjoy the very fact that you are alive. Sing your favorite song as though thousands have paid to hear you. Dance because you can. Get outside, feel the air on your face, smell whatever smells there are to smell, notice the beauty of even a dry brown leaf on the ground; heck, even the rain on your face is more exhilarating than the dry safety of your cubicle.

Just for today, put aside the things that don’t really matter or you can’t change. Leave the dishes and play with the kids. Listen to music while stuck in traffic. Don’t worry about the weather, the dent in your car door or whether your socks match your pants. Your son isn’t potty trained by age 2, don’t worry about it. Your sister has a new car, new phone, new boyfriend, new dishwasher, who cares? Focus on the good in your own life.

Just for today, take some time to care about yourself. Make an appointment for that checkup you’ve put off for far too long. Eat your breakfast, brush your teeth, take your medication as prescribed, check your blood pressure, go for a walk, soak in the tub. Decide that today is the day you quit smoking, give up drinking, find Jesus or address the fact that the stress in your life is overwhelming the good. Be good to yourself so you can be good to others.

Just for today, do something fun. Plan a trip to a far away, exotic place or just down the road. Take the kids to the park and swing with them. Leave a basket of homemade cookies on a friend’s doorstep. Go bowling, play cards, read a book, ride a bike, work a puzzle, draw a masterpiece on your driveway with chalk, go fishing, watch for falling stars, shake your booty. Laugh. Life is short, live a little.

Just for today, care about something important. Care enough to call your parents, your sister or that friend you’ve been too busy to catch up with. Take your dog for a walk, cuddle with your cat. Most of all tell your husband, your wife, your kids how much they mean to you. Hug them close. At the end of the day, all you ever had was love, even if you were too busy to notice.

In memory of my brother-in-law, Rick Holder and my mother-in-law, Camille Tedder.
