Last week my husband and I spent a long weekend at the beach for some R & R. People use the beach for all kinds of recreational purposes: running, volley ball, kite boarding, surfing, swimming or simply laying there soaking up the sun. So while sitting there with my book in hand, I was not surprised to see a man spread a large towel near us and begin a series of yoga exercises. What did get my attention was his age and his extreme flexibility. This man was more flexible than a whole cheerleading squad of 16 year olds! Well maybe not that flexible, but I’ve never seen a man do the splits and then lift his back leg to a 90 degree angle. I couldn’t help but be fascinated.

The next day, the man reappeared and this time, I couldn’t contain my curiosity any longer. I approached him and began a conversation. Kenny was very gracious and happy to talk. I told him I had noticed him the day before and wanted to know more about his yoga practice, how long had he been doing it and what got him started. Kenny started by saying, “I’m in my 70’s now. I quit drinking in my 50’s, when I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.” Sometime after that he discovered yoga. “I just love the way I feel when I move my muscles. Something about the sun, the movement and breathing. I lose myself and forget where I am.”, he continued. I asked him about his diet, whether he followed a certain plan. While very, very lean, Kenny looked very fit. “Not really, I just eat regular food, fruits and vegetables.”, Kenny shrugged with a smile.

We talked a few minutes more, then Kenny gave me a hug and I left him to his yoga. But I’ve thought a lot about Kenny since our brief visit. From our conversation, I’ve deduced that Kenny didn’t have a very healthy lifestyle before he got cancer. Having a life threatening illness forced Kenny to realize that drastic changes were necessary if he was going to enjoy whatever life he had left. Obviously he’s been successful in living some 20 more years with more to come. I’ve seldom met anyone with such inner harmony, peacefulness and happiness. I think Kenny has a lesson for all of us - make good health a focal point of your life and happiness will follow.

When we have good health, both physical and mental, we can’t help but enjoy our life more. We are free to do the things that are important to us, free from worrying about physical limitations and free to explore life’s possibilities. Improving your health won’t be easy but it will be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make. Start today. What are some things you can do right now that will lead to better health? Drink a glass of water. Go for a walk, even 10 minutes and do it again tomorrow. Pick up the phone and schedule that dentist appointment or checkup you’ve been putting off. Eat an apple. Go outside and breathe some fresh air. Spend 10 minutes in prayer or meditation. The important thing is to keep it up and expand on the idea.
