This week, I thought we’d get ourselves ready for the course with a refresher in course etiquette. Hey, we’re all guilty of one (or more) etiquette mistakes per round. From walking on someone’s lie, to talking in someone’s backswing, we all do it.

Here are a few tips that might help your round go more smoothly and keep your playing partners from avoiding you on the course.

Be on time. A good rule of thumb is to be 20 minutes early for your scheduled tee time. Who knows? Arrive early and you may be able to get on the course sooner than you thought. Practice before the match, not during.  This may even leave you with more time to settle your wagers during the round.

Be quiet. Keep your voice down during play. When someone is about to hit, don’t talk. This may help you escape the round without a club being hurled in your direction. And by all means, turn your cell phone on silent during play.

Be safe. Don’t hit into the group ahead of you. Yell “fore” loud enough for the potential victim to hear you if you are placing someone in jeopardy.

Be Prepared. Play quickly – your partners and those behind you are waiting for you to hit.  Play “ready golf” (meaning the player who is ready to hit can do so even if they are not the furthest out.) Just remember to agree on this before play starts. Remember, strive for a four-hour round!

Course Care. Replace divots on fairways and/or use the sand bottles. Don’t drive your golf cart on or near the green. Keep carts off the tee boxes as well. Rake the bunkers when you are done.

On The Green. Repair divots on the green (your divot and anyone else’s you find.) Avoid stepping on your partners’ lines. Mark your ball. Replace the flagstick immediately when done. Exit the green quickly so the group behind you can hit. Oh, and no spitting on the green ... just ask Mr. Woods.

Finally, HAVE FUN! After all, it IS only a game.
