From The Fringe
Mar 18, 2011

Welcome to this week’s From The Fringe! Today’s blog is a follow-up to last week’s post about my first golf outing in ten months. My playing partner and I played the Jonesboro Country Club course last Saturday.

Look up the word "omen" in a dictionary and you'll find a definition similar to this: "a phenomenon or occurrence regarded as a sign of future happiness or disaster." So, after I shot a double bogey on No. 1, I didn't know if the flat tire I noticed on the way to the No. 2 tee box was a good or bad omen.

After JCC Pro Lee Brun was kind enough to bring us a fresh cart, I stepped up on the #2 tee box (you know, the one where I was sure I would sacrifice a few balls in the water last week) and ripped a 9-iron to the center of the green. I'm BACK!!! Well, after I three-putted for bogey, I just decided to take each shot as they came and enjoy not only the beautiful day we were blessed with, but also the company of my even more beautiful fiancee and playing partner.

The ten-month layoff resulted in a roller coaster day. I found the fairway all but two times with my drives. Great, right? However, I three-putted too many times to count. I completely blocked out an 8-iron on #12 which, when I yelled the obligatory "FORE," caused the group on the #17 tee box to run for cover. The shot didn't quite reach them (a tree kept that from happening) but it was definitely my most embarrassing moment of the day.

I could blame the three-putts on the greens being recently aerated, but that wouldn't be the truth. I knew the real reason my putting was horrible was due to not practicing. My short game was sporadic as well. However, with the perfect weather and the awesome company, there was no way I was going to get down on myself.

My worst hole was, well, any number of the double bogeys I had through the round. Number of balls lost -zero! I ended up shooting an 85 - not great, but much better than I thought I would do. Lots of “uh ohs” but even more laughs – the makings of a great day on the course.

It also looks like the Jonesboro Country Club golf course is in fine shape. Once the greens grow back after the aerating, they will be fantastic. The course, as usual, is great - tight and hilly. Great job, JCC. I can’t wait to get back out there soon.

Oh yes, later that night, my body told me I had been away from the game too long. (Note to self: must-work-out)

My playing partner's score, you ask? Well, let's just say ... she always tops me.  :-)
