Masters Memories
Apr 02, 2011
Hello fellow golfers! With the 2011 Masters Golf Tournament coming up next weekend, I thought this week we'd take a look back at some of my favorite Masters Tournaments of the past. There's just something about watching that tournament,  I simply can't NOT watch it! To see if someone will pull off the win looking superhuman (see Tiger Woods' 1997 victory) or to see if someone will look like, well, me (see Greg Norman's flop in 1996).

Tiger's 1997 win (the first of four for Tiger) was amazing. The youngest ever to win the Masters, scoring -18 under par (record), 12 shot margin of victory (record), he just blew the field away. He was the most dominant player, obviously.  It was fun to watch the old guys watch Tiger that weekend - they all looked like fans instead of fellow players.

1996 was the year that Greg Norman would love to forget. He took a 6 shot lead into the final round - and lost to Nick Faldo by 5 strokes. Although a part of me was laughing during the round (let's face it, who doesn't like seeing a pro choke from time to time?) by the end it was simply sad.

But my favorite Masters had to belong to Ben Crenshaw in 1995. I mean, who would have thought he could have pulled that off? He had missed three out of four cuts going in to the Masters that year.  He hadn't broke 70 in two months. Then, to top it off, his golf mentor, teacher, guide - Harvey Penick, passed away. Ben goes to the funeral in Austin, Tx on Wednesday morning, returns to Augusta late that night and woke up the next morning feeling as if he was being guided. The old man was still instructing Ben and we all witnessed a miracle. Balls headed directly for bunkers suddenly change directions and he ends up safe, putts that experts would testify should go left went right - and right in the cup. He did that the entire tournament. When he sunk his last putt of the tournament, he broke down. All the emotions from earlier in the week finally hit him. He wept ... and the golf world wept with him. It was quite a sight to behold.

OK folks, you've heard from me, now let me hear from you. Email me your favorite Masters Moments - from Mr. Saranzen's "Shot Heard Round The Wold" to any of Jack's six wins. Let me hear from you! Send them to me at info@jonesboro.com and I'll be glad to put them in next week's blog.

Thanks for reading and enjoy your week!
