Little Hands: Celebrate Summer!
May 10, 2011

Yay! The sun has come out and my semester is finished! Serious cause for a celebration. I've been planning for months to do something fun when my school was done, and all this rain has given me even more cause to celebrate the coming of summer. Though it wasn't warm enough on our Summer Celebration Day to do some of the fun things I had planned, for those with children in school, it'll be warm enough for you their last week!

We started the morning out with a breakfast of sunnyside up eggs (London eventually ate scrambled haha), bacon, and Sunny D to drink. Lunch was Sunrise quesadillas, which was a tortilla with shredded cheese, chicken, and taco seasoning toasted in a skillet, then cut to make a sunshine shape. I added sour cream on top for a face :). Dinner was going to be grilled chicken, corn on the cob, and broccoli (pretty all American summer), but my mother in law invited us over for Chicken Tikka Masala, an Indian dish that we LOVE. I figured there was enough summer-y ingredients, and grandparents' houses are definitely summer-y, so we went. For dessert, there was fruit salad with strawberries, peaches, bananas, and mandarin oranges.

There was plenty of bubble blowing and coloring with sidewalk chalk, popsicles I'd made the night before from some juice, and lazing around in the sun. The end of school is just around the corner and this may be the perfect idea to celebrate it with your kids! Some other ideas I had but we didn't have enough time or warm enough weather were iced lemonade, water balloon or water gun fights, flying kites, and going to the park to feed ducks.

Some of my favorite memories as a child came from summer vacation, and how fun would it be for your kids to look back one day to remember the annual Summer Celebration Day you always put on? Even on a budget, foods can be made into sunshine shapes, bubbles can be made from dish washing soap, water, and oil, and finger painting outside with washable paint, pudding, or shaving cream is easy to clean up and so fun.

Happy Summer Celebration!

Until next time,
Heather
