Four Years of Frugality: Distractions and Keyboard Cats
Nov 10, 2011

As the semester starts to wind down and final projects are looming around every corner, it is surprisingly very easy to get distracted. Procrastination and I are well-acquainted, but certainly not friends.

My biggest problem lately has been YouTube … and friends who think every Keyboard Cat video ever made is something I have to see right then and there. At this point, I’m worried that cat videos are going to keep me from a degree. Yes – it’s that bad.

So, what do you do about it?

This week, I’ve had to unplug my Ethernet cord just to be able to do homework. This is the best way I’ve come up with if you are anything like me. Nothing is better than having a big ole “DENIED” pop up to send you back to your homework. It’s worked so far, and it has even helped me get finished early. Finishing homework early means getting to bed early, and after three straight months of surviving on just a few hours of sleep a week, this is a blessing.

To do this whole “college” thing, you’ve got to have self-discipline (which is one thing I’m still working on). Making yourself get to work is important and should be easier than it is. But for those days that your self-discipline does not want to cooperate, completely removing the distraction is your best bet.

Unplug the Internet. Keep some music playing in the background. And always save cat videos for when you are finished (see below). Trust me – you want to graduate.

See ya' around campus!
