Four Years of Frugality: Pinterest and Santa Hat Brownies
Dec 16, 2011

For most of you, finals are almost over. Take a deep breath and relax, because you’ve have just completed your first (or just another) semester of college. Congrats! Now for all that free time you will have, here’s how I’ve been spending mine.

I, like an increasing number of ladies my age, am a bit obsessed with Pinterest these days. If you aren’t quite sure what it is I’m talking about, part of me wants to say, “You should totally go check it out,” while the other thinks “Maybe they shouldn’t – they’ll be hooked!” So, I’m leaving that choice up to you. What I can say is I’ve found a number of things I’ve already tried out and hope to use more of the ideas I’ve found.

Pinterest is a social network for people to share ideas and things they like via the Internet. Whether they’ve made these things themselves or are hoping to try these things they happened upon on Google, it is full of great ideas for the crafty side of any person. I’ve been using it lately to find ideas for Christmas parties and have had overwhelming luck finding things. But my goal in using Pinterest has been to find ideas and then change them around for someone on a budget or with little time. So here’s one Pinterest adventure.

One recipe that is very popular lately on Pinterest is “Santa Hat Brownies”. They are absolutely adorable, but I wasn’t about to bake brownies in cookie cutters or cut out little brownie bites after they were baked. So, doing the semi-homemade thing I bought brownie bites already made from my grocery store (in the bakery) along with white, whipped icing and strawberries.

From there, it’s fairly self-explanatory – just make the brownies look like they have on little Santa hats. When I took these to my church's Christmas party, they thought I spent all day working on these little morsels. Plus, they were delicious.

So, whether you are looking for a fun, crafty project, a great homemade gift idea or something to take to a party, Pinterest has enough ideas for you to choose from this year. It’s perfect for the creative college student on a budget. Just don’t let it distract you from your schoolwork – which is easier said than done.

See ya around campus!
