The Cardiologist's Wife Wants You to Walk with a Doc
Feb 01, 2012

Walk With A Doc

February has started and how are you doing with that New Year’s Resolution to get moving? Even if you started but have stalled, this weekend you can get going again. Healthcare Medical Group, or HMG, is kicking off a new event this Saturday, Walk With A Doc. I got the idea after reading and reviewing The 17 Day Diet by Dr. Mike Moreno who started a similar program. (See my post on March 23, 2011 on The 17 Day Diet.) I talked with my husband about the idea who thought it was a great way to promote physical fitness in our area. A bit of research turned up the nonprofit, Just Walk, A Walk With A Doc program which provides support and information to local chapters. Our program is now affiliated with the Just Walk program. Christina Ryan of HMG has been the local organizer behind our program.

The idea is simple; each month HMG will sponsor a walk with one or more of our local doctors participating. If people see their Doc walking, perhaps they will be inspired to become a regular walker. We all know we should exercise and certainly your doctor reminds you. Now your local doctors hope to get you moving with them!

There are many benefits of walking as exercise. We all know how to do it. Walking is free and has a low dropout rate. You just need comfortable, supportive shoes and a safe place to walk. Walking for 30 minutes a day can include the following benefits:

Reduces your risk of heart disease. Improves your blood pressure and blood sugar levels. Reduces your risk of breast and colon cancer. Maintains a healthy body weight. Reduces your risk of Type II diabetes. Improves your mood. Reduces your risk of osteoporosis.

I try to incorporate brisk walking into my regular exercise plan year around, weather permitting. I take our dog so she gets some much needed exercise and we encourage each other. Getting some fresh air and sunshine always makes me feel better.

Walk with a Doc starts at 9 a.m. this Saturday, Feb. 4 in the Food Court in the Mall at Turtle Creek, so weather won’t be an issue. My husband and I will be walking. Someone will also be on hand to take blood pressure readings. Bring the whole family and your friends and do something fun and healthy this weekend.

Until next time,
Lisa
