Monday Popcorn: The Vow
Feb 13, 2012

Well hello there friends! Happy early Valentine’s Day! If you’re anything like me then you’ve probably already eaten too much candy and if you’re single, like myself, then you’re probably sick of the world telling you you’ll be miserable because you’re all alone. I’ll tell you what I’m gonna do, I’m gonna go on with my life like any other day and not feel sorry for myself just because I don’t have someone to take me out and buy me a box of chocolates that only has two flavors out of 20 that I actually like. I’ve decided that if you really love someone then everyday should be a day to show your love, not just some calendar appointed event that only comes around once a year. If you really want to impress your significant other, then tell them you love them every day and mean it. But that’s enough about my stance on Valentine’s Day; let’s talk about this week’s movie, The Vow.

This movie has everything. Channing Tatum. Romance. Channing Tatum. Drama...and...Channing Tatum. I’m kidding, kinda, but he is a huge reason why I loved this movie.

Taking place in beautiful Chicago, together Leo (Tatum) and Paige Collins (Rachel McAdams) make up the perfect witty and adorable hipster couple. Having met four years ago, they’ve been in marital bliss ever since. That all comes crumbling down on a snowy night when they get hit by a truck and Paige goes out the window taking her memory with her. When she finally awakes in the hospital, she has no recollection of her life with Leo and believes she is still in law school and engaged to her ex-fiancé Jeremy (Scott Speedman). After reluctantly agreeing to go home with Leo, much to the dismay of her snooty parents, Paige embarks on a journey to find out who she is and who she loves. Leo tries to get Paige who she was through her work as a sculptor and a walk down memory lane, but she just can’t get past not knowing the details of her life.

In addition to the struggle of figuring out what the heart wants (Jeremy or Leo), Paige must also deal with her family, of whom she was formally estranged from and is hiding a secret that broke them apart in the first place. So what happens next? Does Paige remember her life with Leo? Does she go back to Jeremy? Does she fix things with her family? Well you know I’m not going to tell you so you’ll just have to go see for yourself.

But let me tell you why I like this movie. Not only is it cute and sweet, it reminds me that there is a thing called unconditional love. In a lot of romance movies, people only love according to conditions that are ridiculous, self-centered and often fleeting. If it’s real love then it doesn’t matter what the circumstances are.

Channing and Rachel also have incredible on-screen chemistry and have perfected the on-screen love story. They make you want them to fight for each other and fall in love all over again, skills I’m sure they picked up from the Nicolas Sparks School of Romance. If Channing wasn’t already married to his Step-Up costar Jenna Dewan, then I think they would make a really cute couple. He just has this amazing soft but hard and really funny laid-back personality that is so attractive. No wonder the ladies love him and trust me girls, there’s a lot of him to love in this movie if you’re into tan skin, beautiful eyes, a good sense of humor and some pretty nice abs. But, this movie doesn’t ride on Mr. Tatum’s abs alone. It also helps that this movie is inspired by true events. I can’t imagine what it must feel like to wake up and not know who are or who you love, but if I woke up in the hospital and there was a man standing there telling me he loved me and was willing to fight for my heart, then I think I could learn to love him real quick. The movie also made my friend Allison cry (my friends Rachel and Hannah were able to hold back their tears), and so with that I give it an eight on the 10-point scale. You just can’t go wrong with a good (emphasis on good) love story.

This weekend I’ll be seeing This Means War, starring one of my favorite actresses, Reese Witherspoon, which means I have high hopes for her performance. Have a lovely week, tell someone you love them and mean it.

Until next time,
Raven
