Monday Popcorn: Wrath of the Titans
Apr 02, 2012

Hey guys! I’m going to let you all in on a little secret about me and tell you that I am absolutely in love with Greek mythology. I love all the mythical characters like nymphs, goddesses and all those weird creatures that just don’t make any sense but look really cool. I’m not saying that I believe it and I’m definitely no expert on the subject but I find it all very interesting. I remember watching shows like Xena the Warrior Princess and Hercules when I was younger and I just remember thinking “man I wish I had powers or knew karate” and truth be told, I still kinda wish that I did, so you can imagine my excitement after seeing 2010’s Clash of the Titans and then learning that there would be a sequel, Wrath of the Titans. Now that you know my secret obsession, let’s talk about the movie.

In case you missed the first movie, let me refresh your memory in as few words as possible. Perseus (Sam Worthington) is the son of Zeus, half human and half god (demigod), but upon learning of his god-like heritage chooses to live as just a man. Despite his best efforts, he is forced to use the power and the gifts he is given and defeats this ugly creature created by Hades (Ralph Fiennes, who also plays Voldemort) called the Kraken, then saves the day and gets the girl. Wrath of the Titans picks up 10 years after the end of the last movie and we see that Perseus’ wife Io has died leaving him to raise his 10-year-old son Helius alone. Yet again he is attempting to live as a lowly fisherman, but fate and his father Zeus (Liam Nesson) would have him step up and save the world again.

Zeus tells him that the powers of the gods are dwindling due to the lack of devotion and prayer from humans and the walls of the underworld prison of Tartarus are breaking. This is a problem because when the walls of Tartarus come down all the vicious killer monsters that you don’t want running around in your neighborhood come out. Zeus pleads with Perseus for his help but he refuses because he doesn’t want to leave his son. Zeus then goes to Tartarus to meet with his brothers Hades and Poseidon and his son Ares, but Zeus and Poseidon are betrayed by Hades and Ares who only have intentions of draining Zeus’ power and reviving Kronos (Zeus, Poseidon and Hades’ father). Poseidon is fatally wounded, but not before he delivers the news to Perseus that Zeus is captured. Right before he turns to ash, he gives Perseus his trident and tells Perseus that he must go to meet the warrior-queen Andromeda (Rosamund Pike) and Poseidon’s demigod son Agenor (Toby Kebbell) to find the fallen god Hephaestus (Bill Nighy) who designed and knows the way to Tartarus.

Perseus, Andromeda, Agenor and a group of soldiers set out at sea to find Hephaestus. Agenor explains that Hephaestus created the three weapons that Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon use: Zeus’ Thunderbolt, Hades' Pitchfork, and Poseidon’s Trident, and that together they form the Spear of Triam, the only weapon that can stop Kronos. Once they get to the island they encounter three Cyclopes who back off when they see the trident and then lead them to Hephaestus who then leads them to the door of the Labyrinth. They are attacked by Ares and Hephaestus sacrifices himself so that Perseus, Andromeda and Agenor can go on.

So, they’re finally in Tartarus and things aren’t looking too good for Zeus as his powers are completely drained and Kronos is breaking free. But Zeus is “King of the Gods” he’ll recover…right? Well I’m afraid I’m going to have to put a lid on the plot details and let you go find out for yourself.

As you already know, I love all this crazy mythological stuff, so there’s really nothing bad that I can say. It was all I wanted and more, except there could have been a little bit more romance, but that’s just the girl in me talking so that doesn’t really matter. I like explosions, sword fighting and seeing a two-headed dog that spits fire die, so I give it a 9.5. My own mother called me to say that she was giving it a 9.5 as well, so I think 9.5 is a pretty good rating. Guys will love it and girls will go see it because they want to be with their guy so everybody wins. Besides, I never miss an opportunity to see Liam Neeson in anything, especially if he’s rockin’ a curly beard and can still kick butt and take names. I don’t think I have to say anymore. I LOVED it!

This weekend, I think I’ll be seeing the Cold Light of Day, but I’m somewhat undecided. If any of you have any suggestions, just post your suggestions on Facebook and let me know. Oh and for any of you thinking about going to see Mirror Mirror, I give it a 6.5. It was cute and that’s all I can say.

Until next time,
-Raven
