The Cardiologist's Wife's Advice for Graduates
May 16, 2012

My son graduated from high school last night and today, he turned 18. Such a big moment in his life, in anyone’s life, and we couldn’t be more proud. I’d like to congratulate all the graduates out there, for hanging in when the going got tough and seeing the job through to the end. And just like any parent, I’d like to offer a few words of advice.

Dear Graduate,

Welcome to your new life! From now on, Mom and Dad are not responsible for you or your actions. You are free to make your own decisions, go your own way. Whether you succeed or fail, whether you are financially secure, whether you achieve higher education, these are all your responsibility. Here is some advice; you can use it or learn it the hard way, your choice.

Don’t shy away from hard work and long hours. The most successful people are the ones who work the hardest in everything they do. Don’t think Mark Zuckerberg isn’t involved in every decision made at Facebook.

Get as much education as you can, all your life. Taking more classes and learning something new can benefit you in many unseen ways.

Get a job, any job. Every job you have in life teaches you some lesson though you may not realize what it is at the time. An unpaid internship could lead to a great job after graduation. Volunteer work pays off in a better community and other job skills you can use. Plus it gives you a sense of belonging and self worth.

Always set aside some money in savings each month. Don’t waste all your money on entertainment, the latest fashions or technology. Few things will make you feel more secure in life than knowing you have backup, money in the bank.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask for help. There is always someone willing to teach you and offer advice. Worse, don’t think you know it all. No one does.

Don’t make excuses or look for someone else to blame when you screw up. Everyone makes mistakes but successful people learn from them, fix the problem and move on. Apologize when necessary.

Learn manners. Manners make society function well and will serve you well in every thing you do. People will remember you for your manners, good or bad. What impression do you want to leave?

Take care of your health and the only body you will ever have. Doctors can’t fix everything with a magic pill. Put your best face on and dress for success every day you go out in public. Don’t roll out of bed and head to class or work in the clothes you slept in. Take pride in yourself and let it show. That doesn’t mean you have to wear a suit or dress everywhere but be clean and neat, keep your hair trim and girls, wear a bit of makeup.

Good luck graduates, and make the most out of life every day!
