From the Cardiologist's Wife: What Your Eating Habits Say About You
Jun 20, 2012

What kind of eater are you? How you approach food, what you eat, how often and how much reveals much about your personality. When you sit down to eat with someone, they form many opinions about you, right or wrong, during the course of the meal. You may want to take a look at your food habits so you don’t send the wrong message. Maybe you’ll enjoy identifying your friends’ eating styles as well.

Foodie or an Adventurous Eater:  Foodies love to try new foods, new restaurants and have new experiences. They will demand quality over quantity every time and may be hard to please. Foodies will do what it takes to get what they want and can wait until they get it. They don’t settle for less.

Picky Eaters:  Picky eaters are a bit immature. They never quite made it from the kid’s table to the big table. Definitely hard to please, picky eaters are fussy and refuse to substitute reasonable items. Picky eaters often make others uncomfortable and may be excluded or written off. They may have to work harder to prove their worth at work.

Unconcerned Eater:  The unconcerned eater doesn’t eat for pleasure but for need. They are easy to please and focus their attention on more important matters. They are comfortable companions but may rush the meal. Unconcerned eaters may miss out on important nutritional needs. Men often fall into this category.

Slobs:  Messy, sloppy eaters zoned out when Mom spoke about manners. They may also be unconcerned or picky eaters but not foodies. Foodies respect the whole dining experience too much to be slobs. Slobs don’t care about superficial things (like manners) but care deeply about friends, family and work. They can be embarrassing to others so they need to improve if their work involves dining with clients or the boss or they want to impress a date.

Over-eaters:  Over-eaters favorite restaurants are all-you-can-eat buffets. Their plates resemble Mount Everest and send the message that the person is unhealthy. They have little will power or self control in certain circumstances and are likely overweight. Foodies and slobs may be over-eaters.

Secretive Eaters : A secretive eater keeps a stash of chocolate in their underwear drawer or a fifth of bourbon in the tool shed. A secretive eater is often an over eater or has some emotional problem that is treated with food or drink. If you are overweight and yet eat next to nothing in front of others, no one is fooled. A secretive eater may also be selfish and not want to share with others.

Vegans or Vegetarians: Though there are many reasons people choose to be vegetarians, the majority of people will view them as animal rights nuts. Meat eaters are often uncomfortable eating steak in front of salad eating companions. However, most vegans and vegetarians are very agreeable and not critical of other’s choices. Those who are careful about their diet are probably healthier than meat eaters but some vegans and vegetarians make poor food choices. Vegetarians are level headed, thoughtful and considerate.

Health Nuts:  Health nuts are often opinionated and rigid. They eat organic whenever possible, know what amaranth is and treat themselves to raw cacao nibs instead of dark chocolate. Health nuts are well educated and concerned about their health and yours. They are probably dedicated and hard working.

These are not scientific categories but are drawn from my experiences and observations and are intended to be somewhat humorous and thought provoking.

Until next week,
Lisa
