Campaign for Good News Cyclist Visits Jonesboro
Jul 19, 2012

Chris Greig, the Canadian cyclist who is biking from Alaska to Florida while featuring good news stories from the communities along his route, stopped in Jonesboro Thursday to visit Occasions Pubishing Group.

Grieg began his journey in Fairbanks, Alaska, on June 22 and is attempting to cover 155 miles per day to complete the 7,994-mile trip to Miami, Fla., in approximately 30 days. His total elevation gained during the trip will equal 46.55 kilometers, an astonishing 5.3 times the height of Mt. Everest, with his total distance at 8,000 kilometers, 2.3 times the 2012 Tour de France.

Greig's goal is to remind people of all the positive things taking place in the world and to inspire them to dream big and make a difference in whatever way they can. As he makes his way across the country, Grieg videotapes good news stories and posts them on his web site.

"The opportunity for our staff to meet Grieg and visit with him about his amazing journey was inspirational for us," said Audrey Lott Poff, publisher and CEO of Occasions Publishing Group.

"Grieg chose to spotlight the positive stories that our staff produces each month in Jonesboro Occasions, Jonesboro Faith and Family, Jonesboro Living, NEA Seasons and Jonesboro.com," Poff said. "We are blessed to have the opportunity to write stories and create pubications that highlight the many positive things taking place in Jonesboro and Northeast Arkansas. We are inspired by those we feature locally, and in turn, use our collective abilities to tell those stories in an effort to inspire others."

Poff, who was part of the Jonesboro Sun news team named as a Pulitzer Prize finalist for its coverage of the 1998 Westside Middle School shooting, told Grieg it was partly her coverage of the shooting, its victims and the aftermath that inspired her to publish Jonesboro Occasions, a monthly city/social magazine.

"We aren't the newspaper so we can be more selective about what we publish," she said. "We publish lots of stories that have tragedy or difficult situations that people face in our community, but even those stories help inspire people to meet the needs of others."

Jonesboro Occasions debuted in August 2003 and will celebrate its ninth anniversary next month.

Grieg said he began his Campaign for Good News after becoming tired of the negative stories that dominate the news on a daily basis. He is not seeking to raise money during his journey, only to complete a one-time journey to help inspire and uplift people. Instead of donations, Grieg said those interested could visit his web site, campaignforgoodnews.org, to find ways to help him in his effort.
