Monday Popcorn: Wreck-it Ralph
Nov 05, 2012

Let me just start by saying I love anything Disney. On top of that, I love old arcade games so it was clear that this week I would be seeing Wreck-it Ralph, the story of a misunderstood “bad guy” on his journey to prove he has what it takes to be a hero.

Ralph (John C. Reilly) has spent years just doing his job as the antagonist to his game’s hero, Fix-it Felix, Jr. (Jack McBrayer). Outside of work, Ralph and Felix get along well, but Ralph has grown tired of being treated like a villain after work hours. To prove that bad guys can also be good guys, Ralph jumps to the game Hero’s Duty to win a prestigious medal. He then jumps again to the candy-coated racing game, Sugar Rush, where the feisty 9-year-old racer, Vanellope von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman) ropes him into helping her in her upcoming race in exchange for his medal. But when a mysterious enemy threatens the entire arcade, it’s up to Ralph to learn what it really means to be a hero.

As always with Disney, there is something for adults and children alike. With a perfect blend of entertainment for kids as well as humor and depth for the adults, Wreck-it Ralph is the perfect family movie this season. And while there are plenty of subtle and not-so-subtle jokes for gamers, any nostalgia enthusiast and non-gamer will thoroughly enjoy this movie. While many of the plot twists and turns are predictable, the unique atmosphere and array of charming and smart characters, this animated film is sure to please.

Until next time, Beth
